THE OAKTREE STORY

Oaktree Capital Management is a leading global alternative investment management firm with particular expertise in credit strategies. The firm was formed in 1995 by a group of individuals who had been investing together since the mid-1980s in high yield bonds, convertible securities, distressed debt, real estate and control investments. Today, Oaktree has over 900 employees in Los Angeles (headquarters), London, New York, Hong Kong, Stamford, Houston, Tokyo, Luxembourg, Paris, Frankfurt, Singapore, Seoul, Beijing, Amsterdam, Dublin, Dubai and Shanghai. We have 32 portfolio managers with an average of 23 years of experience and over 730 years of combined experience.

The firm’s competitive advantages include its experienced team of investment professionals, a global platform and a unifying investment philosophy. This investment philosophy, which consists of six tenets—risk control, consistency, market inefficiency, specialization, bottom-up analysis and disavowal of market timing—is complemented by a set of core business principles that articulate Oaktree’s commitment to excellence in investing, commonality of interests with clients, a collaborative and cooperative culture, and a disciplined, opportunistic approach to the expansion of offerings.

The results achieved, thanks to consistent application of our philosophy and principles, have earned Oaktree a large and distinguished institutional clientele. Among Oaktree's global clients are approximately 100 of the 300 largest global pension plans, 75 of the 100 largest U.S. pension plans, over 350 endowments and foundations, 16 sovereign wealth funds and 39 of the 50 primary state retirement plans in the United States.

Our expertise investing across the capital structure has allowed us to cultivate a diversified mix of global investment strategies in six categories: distressed debt, corporate debt, control investing, convertible securities, real estate and listed equities. Importantly, the expansion of our list of strategies has been achieved primarily through “step-outs” into highly related fields, based on identifying markets that (a) we believe have the potential for attractive returns, and (b) can be exploited in a manner consistent with the firm’s risk-controlled philosophy. The gradual expansion of investment strategies at Oaktree is shown in the graphic below:

In addition to growing in-house offerings, we have also widened our reach by forming external relationships, some of which have led to the establishment of new Oaktree strategies. Examples of this broadened scope include:

Our longest-standing relationship with an external partner is with the well known investment management company Vanguard. This partnership began in 1996, when Oaktree was selected as the investment adviser for the Vanguard Convertible Securities Fund, and was broadened in 2011, when we were selected as one of four investment advisers of their Emerging Markets Select Stock Fund.

In 1996, we began working with GFI Energy Ventures LLC, a relationship which formed the basis for the dedicated Power Opportunities strategy, begun in 1999 when Oaktree managed the first two Power Opportunities funds. Later, in 2009, we acquired the GFI team and brought them in-house.

We opportunistically acquired a strategic equity stake in DoubleLine Capital LP, an independent asset manager to which we provided start-up assistance in 2009. This investment in DoubleLine represents Oaktree’s most significant equity investment in an external manager and was undertaken in recognition of our shared investment philosophy that emphasizes risk control, as well as the extraordinary performance record built by the professionals of DoubleLine while at Trust Company of the West.

Concurrent with growth in our investment activities, we have allocated significant resources to internal systems and operations, maintaining a robust, sophisticated platform that enables us to target new opportunities while ensuring the continued ability to provide superior service to clients. Extensive investments in global infrastructure begun in 2008 positioned us for the next stage of our growth and enable us to address the heightened post-crisis needs of clients and other constituents.

In 2014, Jay Wintrob – a member of the Board of Directors since 2011 – was hired as Oaktree’s first Chief Executive Officer to develop and manage our increasingly global business.

As the firm expands, we pay careful attention to our ability to attract and retain talent, as well as to effect the inter-generational transfer of ownership that plays an essential role in making Oaktree an enduring institution. Starting at the end of our first year, and every year or two thereafter, we expanded the ranks of Oaktree’s employee-owners from the original five to more than 215 presently. In 2004, we sold a small amount of equity to a group of long-time clients, and in 2007 these clients exercised an option to double their share of Oaktree equity. Also in 2007 we sold a portion of the company to a group of outside institutional investors via a private offering on the Goldman Sachs TrUE (Tradable Unregistered Equity) platform. Most recently, in 2012, we became publicly traded with units listed on the NYSE under the ticker symbol “OAK.” As of June 30, 2015, 41% of Oaktree’s equity interests are owned by its senior executives and other executive officers and directors. Other current and former employees of Oaktree and a small group of longtime clients hold approximately 28% of Oaktree’s equity interests with the remaining 31% held by public unitholders. Our senior executives still retain over 95% of voting control.
